A team of researchers introduced PLURAL, a new large-scale, value-focused preference dataset grounded in the Integrated Values Survey (IVS), a nationally representative survey spanning 92 countries. The dataset aims to help AI models understand and reflect diverse cultural values beyond the Western-centric focus of most current AI systems.
PLURAL uses a two-stage generation pipeline to transform survey responses into synthetic preference triplets that preserve normative value signals while producing realistic scenarios. This could make AI tools more relatable and useful for people worldwide. Currently, many AI systems reflect Western values, which can make them less effective for users in other cultures.
